Hydrangea serrata 'Mont Aso'
For the time being, the only description of this little Japanese lace-cap, is given to us by Jean Thoby of the Gaujacq Collection in France, that narrates the story of his relatives travelling in Japan in 1977. The aim of this trip was to research Camellia and other teacea, but on the flanks of Mont Aso, they picked up a little hydrangea, immediately baptized H. serrata 'Mont Aso'. This shrub has been grown in the Gaujacq Collection since 1985 and is described as follows: "It is a hydrangea of small size: about 50 to 80 cm, both in height and width of compact growth and dark green leaves with prominent veins. Suckers will appear all around the bush and it could be easily classified as a "ground-covering" plant. The numerous flowers are pink or, at times, blue, but always in a very bright shade". In Italy this plant is still quite rare and characteristics are still to be verified.
